Bulgaria's most iconic landmark sits at 1,147 m in the Rila Mountains, surrounded by ancient forests and alpine meadows. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features stunning frescoes, striped arches, and a thousand years of monastic history. A perfect full-day excursion for culture lovers and photographers — 2 hours through spectacular mountain scenery each way.
Plovdiv Day Trip from Bansko
One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, with 8,000 years of layered history. Walk among Roman ruins, Ottoman mosques, and colourful Revival-era houses perched on the famous Seven Hills. The pedestrian centre buzzes with cafes, galleries, and street art. A comfortable 2.5-hour drive from Bansko, with around 6 hours in the city to explore at your own pace.
Melnik & Rozhen Day Trip from Bansko
Bulgaria's smallest town is famous for its dramatic earth pyramids, traditional Revival architecture, and robust local red wine. We combine Melnik with the medieval Rozhen Monastery and the healing mineral springs at Rupite. Wine tasting at a local cellar is part of the experience. Thasos Island Day Trip from Bansko
The northernmost major Greek island, Thasos lies 40 minutes by ferry from the Greek coast and about two and a half hours by road from Bansko. Pine-forested hills meet sheltered beaches, and ancient ruins — an agora, a theatre, marble quarries still bearing tool marks — are woven into the landscape. A full day from Bansko, and a rewarding one.
Kavala Day Trip from Bansko
A hillside port city on the northeastern Greek coast, two and a half hours from Bansko. The Apostle Paul landed here on his first voyage to Europe; Muhammad Ali grew up here; the tobacco trade made it briefly one of Greece's largest cities. A Byzantine fortress and Ottoman aqueduct frame the harbour where ferries depart for Thasos.
Sofia Day Trip from Bansko
Bulgaria's capital sits two and a half hours from Bansko and holds seven millennia of continuous habitation within a walkable city centre. Roman ruins surface beneath the streets, a 13th-century UNESCO-listed church preserves some of Europe's finest medieval frescoes, and the Neo-Byzantine Alexander Nevsky Cathedral — the largest in the Balkans — anchors the modern city.

Yagodinska Cave & Trigrad Gorge from Bansko
Over 10 km of underground chambers — the longest cave system in the Rhodopes — decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, and prehistoric cave pearls. We also visit Trigrad Gorge, one of only three marble-carved canyons on Earth, where the Trigradska River plunges into Devil's Throat Cave and takes over 90 minutes to resurface. A unique day trip from Bansko into the wild Rhodope Mountains.
Kovachevitsa & Leshten Villages from Bansko
Two perfectly preserved Rhodope mountain villages, about 1.5 hours south of Bansko. Kovachevitsa was designated an Architectural Reserve of National Importance in 1977 — its stone houses date from the 19th century, when the village held nearly 1,740 people. Nearby Leshten perches at 1,093 metres with just 11 permanent residents. On the way back we stop at the Ognyanovo hot springs.
Bear Park Belitsa Day Trip from Bansko
Bulgaria's rescued dancing bears live in a hillside sanctuary just 40 minutes from Bansko. Established in 2000 by Four Paws and the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, the park gives permanent refuge to brown bears whose early training makes rewilding impossible. A meaningful half-day trip that tells the story of a tradition Bulgaria banned in 1998 and finally ended in 2007.

“Best ski school in Bansko. The kids went from pizza wedges to parallel turns in 3 days. We keep coming back every season.”

MARCUS & JULIA WEBER

“We've skied all over Europe and the backcountry touring here is seriously underrated. The Pirin is wild and beautiful. Great guides.”
PETER NIELSEN
Copenhagen, Denmark
“I've had two knee reconstructions and I'd written off anything above 2,500m. Our guide planned the Vihren route around my pace, carried the spare layers, and had me on the summit by lunchtime. First time back on a mountain in six years. I cried a little.”
CLAIRE SUTHERLAND
Edinburgh, United Kingdom
“We were all set for a downhill day out of Bezbog Hut when the weather turned at 2,400m. Our guide made the call to turn back without any drama — we rode the lower forest trails instead and still had the best ride of the trip. That judgment is why you hire a guide.”
KATJA & MARTIN HOFFMANN
Hamburg, Germany
“Best guided hiking experience in the Balkans. Professional, well-organised, and the scenery is out of this world. We'll be back next summer.”
TOM & RACHEL DAVIES
Bristol, United Kingdom
